It's not cheap unless you consider everything it does, but I love the Synthstrom Deluge with the NDLR. Synthstrom's next firmware update, 3.0, is adding a live looper, MPE support and a bunch of other stuff later this year.
My full electronic rig will hopefully soon be Linnstrument 128 (MPE midi controller) > NDLR > Synthstrom Deluge > Empress ZOIA (modular grid style emulti-effects pedal). I don't like having to fuss with a mixer so I'm keeping it simple. The Linnstrument should be here tomorrow and I'm still fundraising for the ZOIA, but I think I'll have a powerful rig that uses very little space.

Sure thing! Most all virtual instruments can be played with a MIDI keyboard, so they receive MIDI notes from whatever MIDI device is sending them, including The NDLR. You will need to configure your virtual instrument for the MIDI Port and Channel for the NDLR part you want it to play. For instance, if you want it to play the PAD part from the NDLR, set up Kontakt for the MIDI Port and Channel you assigned for that NDLR part.

The NDLR USB MIDI has 4 virtual MIDI Ins/Outs, so you could assign the first NDLR port to one virtual instrument, and the next to another and so on. We did this so you could drive four separate virtual instruments without a DAW.

The NDLR, and MRCC are MIDI standard spec, so you should be able to power a "MIDI powered" device from the outputs. From the videos, it sounds pretty decent too!

Other interesting FM synths are the Korg Volca FM, which I really love. Its only 3 voices but it can run DX 7 patches. I think it sounds great.
The Elektron Digitone looks really good, its high on my synth gas list. Its 8 voice, multi-track sequencer, and effects. It is quite powerful.
