The only major MIDI controllers I've enjoyed working with are the Novation SL series and the Launch Control, the editors are simple enough to use and they offer (in the case of the SL series) LCD displays to say what the control does. It's such a pain to set up a whole system like that, and it basically becomes useless if you can't keep track of what a knob or slider does.
If I remember correctly, the Launch Control isn't Class compliant and requires a driver which bums me out, but I loved how I can have each button send 3 separate midi messages per press.
