If you have a tiny bit of memory left it would be nice if one of the unused shift-menu-buttons can be used for a simple MIDI monitor for the MIDI ins's. This would take only very few lines to add and would be very useful.

yeah, like a diagnostic/print screen/warning log...with the ability to clear cache of the log without going to the boot menu.

The newer MRCC device has a little MIDI monitor applet. I'm not sure if that is something we could port over to the NDLR or not, but I could suggest it to Steve and see what he says.
